Manang Village: Rugged Beauty on the Annapurna Circuit
Manang Village is a rugged, culturally rich settlement on the Annapurna Circuit at 3,540m, surrounded by striking arid landscapes and serving as the key acclimatisation stop before Thorong La.
Manang Village: Where the Annapurna Circuit Gets Real
Manang (3,540m) is the largest settlement on the northern section of the Annapurna Circuit. Sitting in a wide, arid valley surrounded by towering peaks, it marks the transition from the lush, green lower trails to the stark, high-altitude terrain leading to Thorong La Pass.
Why Stay in Manang?
Manang is the most important acclimatisation stop on the circuit. Most trekkers spend 1-2 rest days here, and there is plenty to do:
- **Day hike to Gangapurna Lake** — a stunning turquoise glacial lake about an hour's walk above town.
- **Hike to Praken Gompa** — a clifftop monastery with spectacular views of the Annapurna range.
- **Explore the old village** — traditional flat-roofed stone houses, narrow lanes, and mani walls.
- **Visit the Himalayan Rescue Association post** — attend their free altitude sickness lecture (recommended for all trekkers).
Culture
Manang is culturally Tibetan, and the Manangis (Manang people) have a long tradition of trading across the Himalaya. Many have become successful international traders. The village's Buddhist monasteries, chortens, and prayer wheels reflect its deep Tibetan Buddhist heritage.
Practical Tips
- **Accommodation:** Numerous tea houses ranging from basic to relatively comfortable.
- **Internet and charging:** Available at most lodges for a fee.
- **ATM:** There is no ATM — carry enough cash from Kathmandu or Chame.
- **Altitude awareness:** Take your rest days seriously. Do not rush to Thorong La.
Manang is the calm before the storm of Thorong La — enjoy it, acclimatise well, and prepare for the challenge ahead.
