Khumjung: The Village Hillary Built

Khumjung is a charming Sherpa village at 3,790m, nestled in a valley behind the Namche ridge with direct views of Ama Dablam, Everest, and Thamserku. It holds a special place in Khumbu history thanks to Sir Edmund Hillary and a mysterious furry relic.

Hillary's School

After his historic first ascent of Everest in 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary dedicated much of his later life to improving the lives of the Sherpa people. He founded the Himalayan Trust, which built schools, hospitals, and bridges throughout the Khumbu. The school in Khumjung — the Khumjung Hillary School — was one of his first projects and remains a functioning school today.

The Yeti Scalp

The Khumjung Monastery (gompa) is said to hold a "Yeti scalp" — a dome-shaped, reddish-brown furry object displayed in a glass case. While scientific analysis has suggested it is made from the hide of a serow (a goat-like Himalayan mammal), the mystery and the monastery's claim continue to fascinate visitors.

The Village

Khumjung is one of the most authentic Sherpa villages on the EBC route: - Traditional stone houses with potato fields and yak pastures - A beautiful gompa with the Yeti scalp - Quieter than Namche, with a more traditional atmosphere - Excellent bakeries (the cinnamon rolls are legendary)

Getting There

Khumjung is a 1-1.5 hour walk from Namche Bazaar, typically visited as an acclimatisation day hike. The trail passes through Syangboche (home to the Everest View Hotel) and descends into the Khumjung valley.

Khumjung offers a glimpse of authentic Sherpa village life — plus the chance to look a "Yeti" in the eye.
