Kala Patthar: The Best View of Mount Everest You Can Trek To
Kala Patthar at 5,545 metres offers the best unobstructed close-up view of Mount Everest's summit. This rocky viewpoint is the emotional high point of the EBC trek.
Kala Patthar: Face to Face with Everest
Kala Patthar ("Black Rock") is a 5,545-metre rocky outcrop near Gorak Shep that provides the most famous and dramatic view of Mount Everest available to trekkers. While Everest Base Camp itself is on the glacier and the summit is not visible from there, Kala Patthar delivers the iconic, unobstructed panorama.
The Climb
Most trekkers leave Gorak Shep (5,164m) in the pre-dawn darkness to reach Kala Patthar for sunrise: - **Duration:** 1.5-3 hours up, 1-1.5 hours down. - **Altitude gain:** ~380m from Gorak Shep. - **Terrain:** Rocky, steep path — no technical climbing required. - **Challenge:** The altitude makes every step an effort.
The View
At sunrise, the Everest massif is illuminated from the east. From Kala Patthar, you can see: - **Mount Everest (8,849m)** — the full pyramid of the summit, dramatically close. - **Nuptse** — the massive wall of rock to Everest's left. - **Lhotse (8,516m)** — the world's fourth-highest peak. - **Changtse** — Everest's northern shoulder. - **Khumbu Glacier and Icefall** — sprawling below.
Tips
- **Start early** (4:00-5:00 AM) for sunrise — and to have calm winds.
- **Dress for extreme cold** — temperatures at this altitude before dawn can drop below -20°C.
- **Go at your own pace** — there is no shame in stopping short of the top. Even partial views are extraordinary.
- **Bring a headlamp, water, and snacks.**
Kala Patthar is the emotional climax of the EBC trek — the moment when you stand eye-to-eye with the highest point on Earth.
