Gorkha Durbar: The Birthplace of Modern Nepal
Gorkha Durbar is the historic hilltop palace and fortress from which King Prithvi Narayan Shah began the unification of Nepal. A site of profound national significance with spectacular mountain views.
Gorkha Durbar: Where Nepal Was Born
Gorkha Durbar perches on a steep ridge above Gorkha town, about 140 km west of Kathmandu. This hilltop fortress-palace is where King Prithvi Narayan Shah was born in 1723 and from where he launched his campaign to unify the dozens of small kingdoms that would become modern Nepal.
The Palace
The climb to Gorkha Durbar takes about 30-45 minutes from the town below up a stone stairway. At the top you find: - **The Royal Palace** — a beautiful example of Newari architecture with exquisite woodcarvings. - **Gorakhnath Cave** — the sacred cave where the Nath saint Gorakhnath meditated, from which the town and the famous Gurkha soldiers derive their name. - **Kalika Temple** — adjacent to the palace, where animal sacrifices are made. - **Panoramic views** — the Manaslu and Ganesh Himal ranges are visible on clear days.
Historical Significance
From this hilltop, Prithvi Narayan Shah surveyed the lands he would conquer and unify. His campaign, lasting from 1743 to 1769, transformed a patchwork of warring states into the nation of Nepal.
