Gokyo Lakes: Turquoise Jewels of the Everest Region
The Gokyo Lakes are a series of breathtakingly beautiful turquoise glacial lakes in the Everest region. Combined with the panoramic views from Gokyo Ri, this trek rivals the classic EBC route.
Gokyo Lakes: The Everest Region's Hidden Masterpiece
The Gokyo Valley offers an alternative (or addition) to the classic Everest Base Camp trek, centring on a series of stunning turquoise glacial lakes at altitudes above 4,700m.
The Lakes
Six major lakes dot the valley, each more beautiful than the last: - **Dudh Pokhari (Gokyo Lake)** — the third and largest lake, beside which the village of Gokyo sits. - **The lakes' turquoise colour** comes from glacial flour — fine rock particles suspended in meltwater. - Each lake is sacred to both Hindu and Buddhist traditions.
Gokyo Ri
The climb from Gokyo village to the summit of Gokyo Ri (5,357m) is one of the Khumbu's most rewarding experiences. The panorama encompasses: - **Mount Everest** (8,849m) - **Lhotse** (8,516m) - **Makalu** (8,485m) - **Cho Oyu** (8,188m) - The massive Ngozumpa Glacier — the longest in the Himalaya.
Many trekkers consider this four-8,000m-peak view superior to anything on the classic EBC route.
The Trek
- **Duration:** 12-14 days (round trip from Lukla)
- **Combine with EBC** via Cho La Pass (5,420m) for the ultimate Khumbu experience (add 3-4 days).
- **Difficulty:** Challenging, similar to EBC.
Tips
- Gokyo sees fewer trekkers than EBC, especially later in the season.
- The fifth and sixth lakes are less visited and stunningly remote.
- The Cho La crossing is technically demanding — proper gear and a guide are essential.
Gokyo Lakes offer a different flavour of the Everest region — more serene, more colourful, and equally breathtaking.
