Everest Base Camp: The Trek of a Lifetime
The Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek is the most iconic trek on Earth. Following the route of legendary mountaineers through the heart of the Khumbu region, it culminates at the base of Mount Everest (8,849m) — the highest point on the planet.
Trek Overview
- **Duration:** 12-14 days (round trip from Lukla)
- **Maximum altitude:** 5,364m (EBC) or 5,545m (Kala Patthar viewpoint)
- **Difficulty:** Challenging (primarily due to altitude)
- **Best seasons:** March-May and September-November
The Route
- **Lukla to Namche Bazaar** (2-3 days) — through Sherpa villages, across suspension bridges, with your first glimpse of Everest.
- **Namche Bazaar** — the Sherpa capital at 3,440m, where you acclimatise for a rest day.
- **Namche to Dingboche/Pheriche** (2 days) — passing Tengboche Monastery with its famous Everest backdrop.
- **Dingboche to Lobuche** (1-2 days) — through increasingly barren, high-altitude terrain.
- **Lobuche to Gorak Shep to EBC** — the final push to Base Camp alongside the Khumbu Glacier.
- **Kala Patthar** — the 5,545m viewpoint offering the best close-up view of Everest's summit.
Costs
Budget USD 1,500-3,000 total including flights (Kathmandu-Lukla return: ~USD 350), permits, guide, porter, accommodation, and meals.
Permits
- **Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit** — NPR 3,000.
- **Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Fee.**
- **TIMS card.**
Altitude Tips
- Follow the "climb high, sleep low" principle.
- Take rest/acclimatisation days in Namche and Dingboche.
- Stay hydrated (3-4 litres per day).
- Diamox can help but is not a substitute for proper acclimatisation.
The EBC trek is challenging, cold, and demanding — but standing at the base of Everest and looking up at the Khumbu Icefall is a moment of pure, life-affirming wonder.
