Cho La Pass: The Icy Bridge of the Khumbu

Cho La (5,420m) is a challenging mountain pass that links the Everest Base Camp route with the Gokyo Valley, allowing trekkers to combine both iconic destinations in a single, extended trek known as the "Three Passes" or "EBC-Gokyo" route.

The Crossing

Unlike the broad, rocky saddle of Thorong La, Cho La involves: - **Glacial terrain** — a section of glacier with crevasses and ice that requires careful navigation. - **Steep scrambling** — rocky sections on both approaches. - **Ropes may be fixed** during peak season to assist on the steepest sections. - **Duration:** 7-9 hours from Dzongla to Dragnag or Gokyo.

When to Cross

  • **Best months:** October-November and April-May.
  • **Weather dependent** — the pass can close due to fresh snow or dangerous ice conditions. Flexibility in your itinerary is essential.
  • **Early start** — leave by 5:00-6:00 AM to cross before afternoon clouds and weather.

Preparation

  • **Crampons and an ice axe** may be needed, especially in late season. Your guide should carry these.
  • **Experienced guide required** — the glacier crossing is not suitable for unguided trekkers.
  • **Physical fitness** — Cho La is more technically demanding than either Thorong La or Renjo La.

The Reward

Cho La connects two of the Khumbu's most spectacular valleys. Crossing it means you don't have to choose between Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes — you get both, linked by an icy, adrenaline-pumping day.

Cho La is not a pass you walk over — it is one you earn.
