Changu Narayan: Nepal's Oldest Hindu Temple

Changu Narayan sits atop a forested ridge east of Kathmandu, overlooking the valley below. Believed to date from at least the 4th century, it is widely considered the oldest Hindu temple in Nepal and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Temple and Its Art

The two-tiered pagoda temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and houses some of the finest examples of ancient Nepalese stone and wood carving:

  • **Vishnu Vikranta** — a remarkable 5th-century stone sculpture of Vishnu in his dwarf incarnation, considered one of the greatest pieces of art in the Kathmandu Valley.
  • **Garuda Statue** — a kneeling Garuda (Vishnu's mount) facing the temple entrance, dating from the 5th century.
  • **Stone Inscriptions** — the oldest stone inscription in Nepal (464 AD) by King Mandeva is found here.
  • **Doorway Carvings** — the temple's doors and windows feature intricate wood carvings depicting Vishnu's ten incarnations.

The Setting

The hilltop location offers beautiful views of the valley and surrounding terraced farmland. The small village around the temple retains a peaceful, traditional atmosphere — a welcome contrast to the busier Durbar Squares.

Getting There

Changu Narayan is about 12 km from Kathmandu. Most visitors combine it with a trip to Bhaktapur. You can take a bus or taxi to the base of the hill and walk up (20 minutes), or hike from Nagarkot (3-4 hours) along a scenic ridge trail through farmland.

Practical Tips

  • **Entry fee:** NPR 300 for foreigners.
  • **Combine with:** Bhaktapur Durbar Square (6 km away) or a hike from Nagarkot.
  • **Time needed:** 1-1.5 hours.

Changu Narayan rewards those who seek it out — a quiet gem of Nepalese art and spirituality far from the tourist crush.
