Annapurna Base Camp Trek: Your Complete Guide

The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek is one of Nepal's most popular and rewarding treks, leading you through lush rhododendron forests, terraced hillsides, and traditional Gurung villages into a dramatic glacial basin surrounded by some of the world's highest peaks.

Trek Overview

  • **Duration:** 7-12 days (depending on route and pace)
  • **Maximum altitude:** 4,130m (Annapurna Base Camp)
  • **Difficulty:** Moderate to challenging
  • **Best seasons:** October-November (autumn) and March-May (spring)

The Route

Most trekkers follow a circuit: ascending via Chomrong and the Modi Khola valley, reaching ABC, and descending through Bamboo and Jhinu (famous for its natural hot springs).

Key Stops - **Ghandruk or Chhomrong** — charming Gurung villages with spectacular mountain views. - **Bamboo and Deurali** — ascending through forest along the Modi Khola river. - **Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,700m)** — a stunning campsite beneath the Fishtail mountain. - **Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m)** — the glacial sanctuary surrounded by Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre.

Permits Required

  • **TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System)** card.
  • **Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)** — NPR 3,000 for foreigners.

Costs

Budget USD 25-40 per day for tea house accommodation and meals along the trail. Guide and porter costs are additional (USD 25-35 per day each).

Tips

  • Acclimatise properly — spend an extra night at Deurali or MBC if you feel altitude symptoms.
  • The trail can be icy above Deurali from December to February.
  • The ABC sanctuary is a no-fire zone — nights are cold, so bring a warm sleeping bag.

The moment you step into the Annapurna Sanctuary and see the amphitheatre of peaks towering above you, every step of the journey becomes worthwhile.
