Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park: Nature on Kathmandu's Doorstep

Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park covers the forested hills on the northern and western rim of the Kathmandu Valley. At 159 square kilometres, it is the closest national park to any capital city in Nepal — and possibly the world.

Why Visit

  • **Forest immersion** — dense subtropical and temperate forests of oak, rhododendron, and pine blanket the hillsides.
  • **Birdwatching** — over 300 bird species have been recorded, including the spiny babbler (Nepal's only endemic bird), various barbets, minivets, and raptors.
  • **Hiking** — well-marked trails wind through the forest to the summit of Shivapuri Peak (2,732m), with views of Langtang and Ganesh Himal on clear days.
  • **Source of the Bagmati** — the sacred Bagmati River originates within the park at a spring near the summit.

Popular Hikes

  • **Shivapuri Peak** — start from Budhanilkantha (4-5 hours round trip). A moderately strenuous climb through beautiful forest.
  • **Nagarjun Forest (Jamacho)** — start from the western entrance near Balaju. The hilltop Jamacho Stupa offers valley views (2-3 hours round trip).
  • **Sundarijal to Chisapani** — a popular day hike that skirts the park's eastern edge, often done as the start of the Helambu/Langtang trek.

Practical Tips

  • **Entry fee:** NPR 1,000 for foreigners.
  • **Gates open:** 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
  • **Carry water and snacks** — no shops inside the park.
  • **Best season:** October-April for clear skies and comfortable temperatures.

Shivapuri Nagarjun is proof that you don't need to leave Kathmandu to find wild nature and peaceful forest trails.
