Rupa Lake: Pokhara's Hidden Birdwatching Gem

Rupa Lake lies in a peaceful valley between Begnas Lake and Pokhara, yet it is overlooked by most visitors. For birdwatchers and nature lovers, this is a significant oversight.

Birdwatching

The marshy shores and surrounding wetlands attract a remarkable variety of bird species: - Migratory waterfowl during winter (November-February) - Kingfishers, herons, and cormorants year-round - Various raptor species soaring over the surrounding hills

The Lake

Rupa is the third-largest lake in the Pokhara Valley. Its waters are shallow and surrounded by reeds and wetland vegetation, creating ideal habitat for aquatic birds and fish.

Visiting

  • A walking trail connects Begnas Lake to Rupa Lake (about 45 minutes through villages and farmland).
  • Boat rides are available from the eastern shore.
  • The surrounding villages offer an authentic glimpse into rural Nepali life.

Getting There

Most visitors combine Rupa Lake with Begnas Lake as a half-day or full-day excursion from Pokhara. Local buses run to nearby Begnas Bazaar.

Rupa Lake is a quiet reward for those willing to venture just a little further than the usual Pokhara circuit.
