Phulchowki Hill: The Kathmandu Valley's Rooftop

Phulchowki ("Flower-Covered Hill") is the highest of the hills encircling the Kathmandu Valley at 2,762 metres. It offers a challenging day hike through some of the richest forest in the region.

The Hike

The trail starts from Godawari Botanical Garden and climbs steadily through dense forest for about 3-4 hours. The path is steep in places but well-defined. The descent takes 2-3 hours.

What Makes It Special

  • **Rhododendron forests** — in spring (March-April), the hillside erupts in red, pink, and white rhododendron blooms.
  • **Birdwatching paradise** — over 300 species recorded, including the rare cutia, various laughingthrushes, and the elusive satyr tragopan.
  • **Winter snow** — Phulchowki occasionally receives snow between December and February, transforming the forested summit into a winter wonderland.
  • **Summit views** — on clear days, the Himalayan panorama from the summit is spectacular.

Practical Tips

  • **Start early** — clouds often move in by early afternoon.
  • **Carry warm layers** — it is significantly cooler at the summit than in the valley.
  • **Bring binoculars** if you are interested in birds.
  • **A military checkpoint** at the summit requires ID; carry your passport.

Phulchowki is a serious hike by Kathmandu Valley standards, but it rewards the effort with extraordinary natural beauty and mountain views.
