Makalu Barun: From Jungle Floor to the Fifth-Highest Peak

Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Area covers 2,330 square kilometres of eastern Nepal, protecting an extraordinary vertical range of ecosystems — from subtropical forests at 435m to the summit of Mount Makalu (8,485m), the world's fifth-highest peak.

Biodiversity Hotspot

The park's dramatic altitudinal range creates an exceptional concentration of biodiversity: - **25 species of rhododendron** — more than almost anywhere in the world. - **Over 400 bird species.** - **Red panda, snow leopard, clouded leopard, Himalayan black bear.** - **Numerous orchid species** — including several endemic to the region. - Scientists continue to discover new species here.

The Makalu Base Camp Trek

  • **Duration:** 18-22 days round trip from Tumlingtar.
  • **Maximum altitude:** 5,000m+ (Makalu Base Camp area).
  • **Difficulty:** Very challenging — remote, high, and with limited facilities.
  • **Best season:** October-November and April-May.
  • The trek passes through an astonishing range of environments — from bamboo jungle to alpine desert.

Why Visit

Makalu Barun is one of the least-visited national parks in Nepal, offering genuine wilderness. The trails are quiet, the villages are traditional, and the sense of isolation is complete.

Makalu Barun is where Nepal's wild heart still beats — unchanged, unvisited, and utterly magnificent.
