Kanyam: Where Tea Becomes Art

Kanyam Tea Garden in the Ilam district of eastern Nepal is widely regarded as the most beautiful tea estate in the country. The perfectly manicured rows of tea bushes follow the contours of rolling hills, creating a hypnotic green landscape.

The Tea Garden

**Established during the Rana era**, Kanyam has been producing tea for over a century.
The estate produces **orthodox tea** — hand-plucked and traditionally processed, prized for its delicate flavour.
**Tea plucking season** runs from March to November, with the first flush (spring) producing the most valued leaves.
The garden sits at approximately 1,500m, with cool temperatures and frequent mist creating ideal tea-growing conditions.

What to Do

**Walk through the tea rows** — the symmetry and green intensity are mesmerising.
**Visit the processing factory** — watch how fresh leaves are withered, rolled, oxidised, and dried.
**Sample fresh tea** — taste the difference between first flush and second flush varieties.
**Photography** — early morning and late afternoon light creates magical conditions among the tea bushes.

Getting There

Kanyam is on the main road between Birtamod (in the Terai plains) and Ilam town (about 30 km from Ilam). Buses and shared jeeps run regularly.
