Kagbeni: The Medieval Gateway to Upper Mustang

Kagbeni is a fascinating medieval village marking the official border to Upper Mustang, with mud-brick houses, a 15th-century monastery, and a dramatic setting in the Kali Gandaki gorge.

Kagbeni: At the Threshold of the Forbidden Kingdom

Kagbeni is a remarkable village at the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Jhong Khola rivers, at 2,810m. It is the last village before the restricted zone of Upper Mustang, and it feels like stepping through a portal into medieval Tibet.

The Village

Kagbeni's architecture is unlike anything in the Kathmandu Valley: - **Flat-roofed mud-brick houses** clustered tightly together against the wind. - **Narrow, tunnel-like alleys** between buildings. - **Kag Chode Thupten Samphel Ling Gompa** — a 15th-century monastery with ancient Buddhist murals and statues. - **Prayer wheels and mani walls** at every turn.

The Checkpoint

The police checkpoint at Kagbeni marks the beginning of the Upper Mustang restricted area. Trekkers heading north must show their special permit (USD 500 for 10 days) here. Those without permits must turn back.

For Trekkers Without Upper Mustang Permits

Kagbeni itself is well worth visiting even without an Upper Mustang permit: - Stroll the atmospheric lanes and visit the monastery. - Enjoy the dramatic views up the Kali Gandaki towards Lo Manthang. - Take a day hike along the river or up to surrounding ridges. - Stay in one of several comfortable lodges.

Getting There

A 3-hour walk north from Jomsom along the Kali Gandaki riverbed. Or accessible by jeep track.

Kagbeni is where the accessible Annapurna trails end and the mysterious Upper Mustang begins — a place suspended between two worlds.
