Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave: Pokhara's Sacred Underground
Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave is a deep limestone cave directly across the road from Davis Falls. It descends into the earth through a series of chambers until reaching a point where the water from Davis Falls can be seen cascading through from the other side — a remarkable underground spectacle.
The Sacred Shiva Lingam
The cave's main attraction is a large, naturally formed stalagmite that devotees worship as a Shiva lingam. Hindus consider it a sacred site, and regular puja (prayer ceremonies) take place inside the cave.
Exploring the Cave
- The cave is well-lit with electric lights and has paved walkways.
- The passage descends through narrow and wide sections, with stalactites and stalagmites along the way.
- At the deepest accessible point, a window-like opening reveals the back side of Davis Falls — a truly unique perspective.
- The cave can feel claustrophobic in narrow sections.
