Godawari Botanical Garden: A Floral Haven Near Kathmandu

The National Botanical Garden at Godawari lies at the base of Phulchowki Hill, about 10 km south of Kathmandu. Spread across 82 hectares, it is Nepal's premier botanical collection and a beloved picnic spot for locals and visitors alike.

What to See

  • **Orchid House** — home to dozens of native Nepalese orchid species, best viewed in spring.
  • **Fern House** — a shaded collection of the valley's diverse fern species.
  • **Rose Garden** — colourful displays blooming from March to November.
  • **Cactus House** — an unexpected collection of cacti and succulents.
  • **Native tree trails** — paths winding through stands of sal, oak, and rhododendron.
  • **Lily ponds** — serene water features dotted with aquatic plants.

Phulchowki Connection

The garden sits at the trailhead for Phulchowki Hill (2,762m), the highest point surrounding the Kathmandu Valley. Serious hikers can start from Godawari and reach the summit in 3-4 hours.
