Tucked behind a high wall just minutes from the chaos of Thamel, the Garden of Dreams (Swapna Bagaicha) is one of Kathmandu's most unexpected and delightful attractions.
History
Built in 1920 by Field Marshal Kaiser Shumsher Rana, the garden was inspired by European neo-classical design. After decades of neglect, it was meticulously restored with Austrian development assistance and reopened in 2006.
What You Will Find
The walled garden covers 6,000 square metres and features:
- **Three ornamental pavilions** — elegant colonnaded structures perfect for sitting and reading.
- **Pergolas, balustrades, and urns** — decorative European-style garden elements.
- **A central pond** with a small fountain and water features.
- **Lush lawns and flowering trees** — a green carpet surrounded by tropical and temperate plants.
