Garden of Dreams: Kathmandu's Hidden Oasis

Tucked behind a high wall just minutes from the chaos of Thamel, the Garden of Dreams (Swapna Bagaicha) is one of Kathmandu's most unexpected and delightful attractions.

History

Built in 1920 by Field Marshal Kaiser Shumsher Rana, the garden was inspired by European neo-classical design. After decades of neglect, it was meticulously restored with Austrian development assistance and reopened in 2006.

What You Will Find

The walled garden covers 6,000 square metres and features:

  • **Three ornamental pavilions** — elegant colonnaded structures perfect for sitting and reading.
  • **Pergolas, balustrades, and urns** — decorative European-style garden elements.
  • **A central pond** with a small fountain and water features.
  • **Lush lawns and flowering trees** — a green carpet surrounded by tropical and temperate plants.
  • **An amphitheatre** — occasionally used for cultural performances and events.
  • **Kaiser Cafe** — a charming restaurant within the garden, run by Dwarika's Hotel, serving coffee, pastries, and meals.

Why Visit

The Garden of Dreams offers something rare in Kathmandu: silence. The thick walls block out the traffic noise, honking, and bustle of the surrounding streets. It is the perfect place to recharge between sightseeing sessions, read a book, or simply sit and watch butterflies.

Practical Information

  • **Entry fee:** NPR 400 for foreigners, NPR 100 for Nepalis.
  • **Opening hours:** 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily.
  • **Location:** Tridevi Sadak, directly adjacent to Thamel. Look for the green metal entrance gate.
  • **Time needed:** 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your pace.

The Garden of Dreams proves that even in one of Asia's most hectic cities, serenity is just a gate away.
