Bat Cave (Chamero Gufa): A Thrilling Underground Adventure in Pokhara

Bat Cave (Chamero Gufa) near Pokhara is a thrilling underground experience where thousands of horseshoe bats hang from the ceiling in near-total darkness. Not for the faint-hearted!

Bat Cave (Chamero Gufa): Pokhara's Dark Adventure

Bat Cave (Chamero Gufa) is a natural limestone cave about 5 km north of Pokhara Lakeside. While Mahendra Cave nearby is relatively spacious and well-lit, Bat Cave offers a rawer, more adventurous caving experience — including its thousands of resident horseshoe bats.

Inside the Cave

The cave is narrow, dark, and atmospheric: - **Thousands of bats** cling to the ceiling and walls, creating an eerie soundtrack of high-pitched chirps and rustling wings. - **Narrow passages** require crouching and even crawling in places — claustrophobic visitors should think carefully. - **Stalactite formations** decorate the ceiling, visible by torchlight. - **The cave floor** is uneven and can be slippery with bat guano.

The Experience

Entering Bat Cave is genuinely thrilling. Your torch beam sweeps across a ceiling alive with thousands of tiny, upside-down creatures. The sound, the darkness, and the tight spaces combine into an experience that is part adventure, part nature documentary.

Practical Tips

  • **Bring a powerful torch** — the cave has minimal lighting.
  • **Wear old, sturdy clothes** — you will get dusty and possibly encounter bat droppings.
  • **Not suitable** for very young children or those uncomfortable in confined spaces.
  • **Entry fee:** NPR 100 for foreigners.
  • **Combine with Mahendra Cave** — just a 10-minute walk away.
  • **Getting there:** Taxi from Lakeside (NPR 500) or rent a bicycle for a pleasant ride.

Bat Cave is Pokhara's wildest underground experience — dark, thrilling, and completely unforgettable.
