Asan Market: A Sensory Overload in Kathmandu's Oldest Bazaar

Asan Market is Kathmandu's oldest and most vibrant bazaar — a chaotic, colourful, and utterly captivating maze of spice sellers, textile merchants, street food vendors, and ancient temples.

Asan Market: Kathmandu's Ancient Trading Heart

Asan (or Ason) is the oldest and most vibrant marketplace in Kathmandu, located at a historic crossroads in the heart of the old city. It has been a trading hub for centuries and remains the pulse of daily Kathmandu life.

What You Will Find

The narrow streets radiating from the central Asan Tole are packed with vendors selling:

  • **Spices** — turmeric, cumin, chilli, and mysterious blends piled in colourful pyramids.
  • **Textiles** — saris, pashminas, dhaka fabric, and everyday clothing.
  • **Grains and dried goods** — rice, lentils, dried fish, and noodles.
  • **Religious offerings** — flower garlands, incense, tikka powder, and brass puja items.
  • **Street food** — fresh samosas, sel roti, chatpate, and seasonal fruits.

Temples Among the Trade

Several important temples are woven into the marketplace fabric:

  • **Annapurna Temple** — dedicated to the goddess of abundance, appropriately located amid the food sellers.
  • **Ganesh shrines** — small shrines at various intersections where traders pray for good business.

Tips for Visiting

  • **Go in the morning** (8-10 AM) when the market is at its most active and the light streams through the narrow lanes.
  • **Leave your bags** at your hotel — the lanes are tight and crowded.
  • **Walk slowly** — the joy of Asan is in the details: the carved wooden windows above the shops, the ritual life at the temples, the sound of temple bells mixing with vendor calls.
  • **Be prepared for crowds** — Asan is not a sanitised tourist experience; it is real, raw, and wonderful.

Getting There

Asan is in the heart of old Kathmandu, about a 10-minute walk southeast of Thamel or a 5-minute walk north of Kathmandu Durbar Square. No vehicles — it is entirely pedestrian.

Asan Market is Kathmandu at its most authentic — noisy, fragrant, chaotic, and absolutely essential.
